Calico Farms:
Did you know we use an organic heritage flour in all of our non-gluten-free baked goods? It’s true! In season we offer some of our ADGA registered Nigerian Dwarf goats from heavy milking and showing lines for sale that we have not retained. Lavender Cottage: We offer a wide range of Freeze Dried items, from vegetable to fruit snacks and powders. Dogwood Valley Greenhouse:
They say about perennial plants:
“First year they sleep,
Second year they creep,
Third year they leap!”

Most of the plants you have purchased from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse, particularly in early spring, have been early second year perennials. They are beginning to creep, meaning slow and steady growth, and flowering for their first season, after sleeping in the greenhouse last year and growing strong root systems. But I have a good stock of many of my perennials right now, and would like to offer these larger pants to you, after a second season of growth, for the same prices as the younger plants. Planted now and on into fall, they will put down strong root systems and be ready to leap into full growth and bloom for you next spring! Check through my perennial listings and see what you can use as fill-ins in bare places in your gardens.

I also have a good stock of full, healthy herb plants to add for culinary or medicinal use. I have one of the largest selections of herb plants in middle Tennessee. There is no need to travel to Nashville or Huntsville for those less common herb plants! And my plants are grown and nurtured right here in Coffee County, not in another state and shipped in to the big box store.

Periwinkle and Pine: We are excited to showcase our new beautiful Lavender and Peony wreath, and our pretty summer Periwinkle Berry and Rose wreath. Every wreath in our shop is lovingly handmade.

Trinity Rose Micro Dairy: We are happy to offer raw cows milk from our Jersey cow. “Zoe” is tested A2 / A2 protein which may be easier for people with milk allergies to digest. Our girls are on pasture full time and get a non-GMO & organic mix of grain while being milked. All milk sold as labeled for pet consumption only as per Tennessee State law.

Arrington Bread Co: We make our sourdough with simple, quality ingredients and our 88-year-old sourdough starter, which we named Josh Dough-ban because we raise him uuuuuup!

We offer flavors like jalapeño cheddar, Parmesan garlic, strawberry cheesecake, and of course our classic plain! Plus many more. We look forward to baking for you!

Flying S Farms: Several great vegetables to offer this week and our Chickens have slowed down again, they hate the heat! Weather plays a big factor in how they lay their beautiful Brown Eggs. Sour Dough Bread this week plain or fresh ground wheat. Unfortunately no sweet breads, set back is due to Ben’s changing treatment schedules! He is doing fine, they are adding more follow up test and so far so good.

MISC MARKET NOTES

The Good, the Bad, and the Needs a LOT of Work


Many of you in our Market family are aware that after a long construction break your fearless Market manager began rebuilding the garden at Hortons Farm this year. We’re building quite literally from SCRATCH after years of an unplanned sabbatical as evidenced by all the wild grass trying to take over. But rebuild is started and this is an update on our progress AND lack of progress.

The GOOD: PERMACULTURE WORKS. So far I’ve built four permaculture beds (in addition to three stock tank raised beds) from locally sourced and recycled material here on the farm. I decided on this after years of observing a relative’s success with this method and studying multiple sources on the internet. I’m happy to tell you that I’ve had minimal weed problems inside the beds that were planted and have been happy with what they’ve produced.

One of our favorite things is a burn pit that Mr. Horton blessed the garden with. We currently have a good amount of charcoal made from felled limbs around the property. It will be crushed and activated to use as biochar in existing and future beds. We are SOOOOOOOOOOOO excited to create this “thousand year fertilizer.” The only downside to the burn pit is that I have to watch my step if I venture near it after dark. That sucker is DEEP.

We’re also starting to see a few winecap mushrooms spring up in the beds from mushroom spawn included at construction. This was added to speed the soil building process. WindRiver Microbes from Longears & Herbs are in there too to give the soil additional advantage.

The BAD: In retrospect I should have worked on walkways simultaneously while building the beds. Since that didn’t happen nature took over and it’s been a battle keeping grass and weeds low enough to walk on. Thank God for weed eaters! But with all the rain it’s still a lot of work keeping it under control as evidenced by tall grass (on the left) in the photo below.

This developing bed has comfrey next to the fence as a grass root blocker and is being filled with asparagus. We’ve learned from experience that asparagus can naturalize so we planted seed and will do transplants this winter.


”NEEDS A LOT OF WORK”: Where do I start!?! This winter I’ll be working on east side infrastructure: finishing the bed(s) needed there and fixing the paths between beds so all the existing grass/weed roots are dead by spring. I’ll also be collecting more organic material for building soil in the beds.

Greenhouse repairs are needed. Thankfully we have the material and I should be able to start seed again early next year.

Once the she/shed and garden fence (west side) are completed the plan is to cover a section of ground with tarps for a few months as the beginning of a Grocery Row Garden. That’s a whole topic in itself!

Finishing up: the following is my favorite bed. I think it’s beautiful. It is the newest and is built around a witch hazel tree from Dothan Nurseries, Greenhouse and Gifts. (And I can’t tell you if they’re still available as it’s been there a year or two.) As you can see, it’s rather rustic with big logs and branches for borders and all kinds of plant material tossed on top. Right now the plan is to put tumeric and maybe ginger on either side of the tree once the material underneath has broken down more. If you can see it, those round things on top are anniversary roses gone on to their next life.

Katherine’s Kitchen Happy August!

God has been so merciful to us this July with all the rain. Even if you’re not a farmer, you can thank the Lord that this will help keep fresh seasonal food prices down this summer. I hope we can all get ready for a typically hot August and use the lush results of July to prepare us for possibly some real dry weather coming up!

I don’t have any produce growing. Taking care of my Dad for the last 4 weeks left the farm unattended and everything died.

There’s a new bridge and boardwalk connecting the Blind Willie McTell Trail to the market venue! Come out and visit your local farmers and neighbors!

Connor’s Garden has produced some interesting gourds if you are feeling crafty or would like to get an early start on your fall decorations! Guess what? Laundry detergent is back in stock! What is your favorite scent? I think Evergreen Forest or Coco Mademoiselle sound great! Some Farmstand Cornbread from Lucky Star pairs great with seasonal vegetables like tomatoes, peppers and squash! It’s a great time to do some canning or freezing so that you can enjoy the taste of summer for months to come! Plus, you can’t beat home-preserved foods without excess salt or sugar or preservatives! You can pick up your order starting at 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 925 Mitchell Street in Conway. You are welcome to come in and sit down in the lobby if you are early, but we may not be able to check you out until 3pm.
